If you would rather not go through the hassle of installing WordPress manually, there is an automated solution for those with cPanel hosting with Fantastico. Fantastico is a script library, which offers automated installations of a number of open source applications including WordPress. No file uploading is necessary, and no database creation needed. All the hard stuff is handled by Fantastico. All you need to do is fill in your preferred admin login info, click a few buttons, and you’re done.
Before You Begin
You’ll need to have your domain pointed to your cPanel/Fantastico web host. Don’t have a web host? We’d recommend HostGator. They always have the latest version of WordPress pre-loaded and ready to install in Fantastico. Once you’re all set up with your web host, access cPanel at yourdomain.com/cpanel, type in your username and password (provided by your host) and locate the Fantastico button.
Begin The Installation
Once you’re on the Fantastico screen, it should look something like the following screenshot:
Click the “New Installation” link to begin (we know it’s a little hard to read).
Step 1
On this screen, you’ll be asked if you would like to install WordPress in a sub directory. If you want WordPress to be installed on the root domain, you can leave this first input box blank.
Next is the admin access data, which you’ll use to login to your WordPress administration panel. Make sure the password is something hard to guess, but easy for you to remember.
Base configuration includes your nickname, your e-mail address, the site title, and description.
Step 2
You don’t have to actually do anything in this step. It is just informing you the database name that will be created for you, automatically. If you do, however, encounter an error - you may have to delete a file or directory that’s “in the way” so to speak. Click the “Finish Installation” button to proceed.

Step 3
Again, you don’t have to do anything at this step either. If everything has gone smoothly, you should be informed that the WordPress installation was successful. Do take note of your username and password before closing this page. That’s it, you’re done! Now, wasn’t that easier than manually installing WordPress?
Don’t like editing code? Want to change up your sidebar? No worries with PowerTheme’s WordPress themes, as all of them are widget-ready. In this tutorial, we’ll be going over how to use WordPress’ built in widgets system to manipulate your sidebar without touching any code.
Find The Widgets Menu
If you have a recent version of WordPress, this shouldn’t be too hard to find. In this guide, we’ll be using the latest version of WordPress (at the moment) which is 2.6. Simply click the “Design” link in your WordPress administration panel, and then visit the “Widgets” page, located in the sub-menu. Here’s a screenshot to show you exactly where it is.

WordPress Widget Menu
On this page, you’ll see a list of “Available Widgets” on the left, and “Current Widgets” on the right. The available widgets are all the possible widgets you are items you can place on your sidebar. Some of these include your Blogroll links, a list of pages, your categories and archives, a search box, and recent comments. You can drag these on over to the right, under Current Widgets, in a “drag and drop” fashion.
In the above screenshot, I am currently using only 5 widgets, although you can have as many as you’d like. Feel free to reorder, add, and remove new widgets to your heart’s content. The changes will be reflected on your WordPress site when you hit the “Save Changes” button.
Altering Widget Behavior
Most of WordPress’ default widgets have options configurable through the widget’s “Edit” under the Current Widgets list.

In the example to the left, I’ve clicked the “Edit” link to alter the behavior of the Categories and Archives widgets, respectively.
You’ll see that I can change the title of the widget, which is the text that is displayed above the widget content on the sidebar.
I can also choose to display the lists as a dropdown menu, as opposed to a list.
I’m also given the option to display post counts, which displays a number of posts contained in a respective category or archive.
The options vary from widget to widget, so it’s best to experiment by clicking the “Edit” links on any widget you’d like to place on your sidebar.
Most of them, at the very least, allow you to change the title of the widget.
Some widgets, such as the default “Search” widget, offer no options. This is because the search widget is usually just an input box, with no text or other options one would expect to configure.
Text Widgets
One of the most simple, but useful widgets is the text widget. These will allow you to place any text, or even HTML code, inside a widget. WordPress allows unlimited text widgets, so feel free to add as many as you need.

More Than One Widgetized Sidebar
Some themes, such as our three-column VideoDen theme, have more than one widgetized sidebar. To edit the widgets an another sidebar, simply select the dropdown menu under “Current Widgets” and click the Show button. Make sure you save your changes before switching to editing another sidebar. Sidebar widgets don’t necessary have to be on the sidebar either. Widgetized areas can be in other parts of the theme, such as the footer. Usually there will be a descriptive title in this dropdown menu so you can differentiate the different widget areas.
Finding New Widgets
Widgets are very similar to plugins in a sense. You are able to download and install them, which can breathe more life into your WordPress site’s sidebar. A good place to find new widgets for your sidebar is the WordPress plugin directory.

DFW Tourism
One of the leading Dallas-Fort Worth tourism websites on the internet - using a customized version of our VideoDen theme.

Criminal Minds .net
A Criminal Minds (television show) fansite uses a customized version of our MagPress theme.

To set a custom featured image in the MagPress theme, you’ll need to use a featured built into WordPress called: custom fields.
Set the custom field key and value
When creating a post, use the custom field key named: Featured Image. Make sure you use the key “Featured Image” (without quotes) exactly, or it may not work. Removing the space or setting characters to lowercase may cause this feature to simply not work. For the value, type in the image name located in the /featured/ directory of the MagPress theme. This will look something similar to this: http://www.example.com/wp-content/themes/MagPress/images/featured/
In the example I used an image called tech-blue.png. This can be named anything, as long as it’s in the proper directory.
Upon publishing this post in your featured category, this custom image you defined will be displayed as you see it on the demo.
The sub header text which you see in our popular free theme, Elegance, can be easily changed. Simply open up the header.php and locate the “subheader” div.
Everything in the <p id=”sub-1″> paragraph, will be the text displayed upon loading. Everything in the <p id=”sub-2″> paragraph, will be displayed upon clicking “Read More.”
Upon saving your changes, the text will be displayed live on your Elegance-powered WordPress blog.

Who said a premium WordPress theme had to cost money? That’s simply not true, because this one is absolutely free. Since it’s free, it’s lacking in features in comparison to our other paid themes. This doesn’t have the fancy theme options page our other themes have.
Not too bad for a free WordPress theme, eh? Check out the live demo to see some of these features in action. Try clicking the “Read More” link under the “Welcome to my little blog.” heading, it’s pretty cool. While you’re there, click the input box for the search, and then click the message that pops up to fade it away.
This bright red blog theme is ideal for a video site.
What exactly is the “completely customizable homepage” you may be wondering? Take a look at the screenshot below of VideoDen’s Theme Options page to see what we mean.
Through this page, the featured category can be assigned, the name of all homepage headings, and the number of recent posts to display on the homepage.
This beautiful WordPress magazine theme will give your blog the edge you need to advance past the usual blog structure into a complete CMS.
You’re probably wondering what exactly you can do with a “completely customizable homepage.” Just take a look at the “Theme Options” page of the MagPress theme, and you’ll see what we mean.
As you can see, everything on the homepage, top to bottom, is easily customizable through this menu. It is conveniently placed in your WordPress admin panel upon activation of the theme.
